How to Test Water – With the PoolTest 6 Photometer?

STEP	DIRECTION
*Notes*	All tests must be completed within 5minutes of taking water sample. A black rubber cap must be used on sample vials when sample is tested. All vials to be dried before testing. Water is not permitted in the photometer. When mixing solution, always limit bubbles and place/ sit vial on hard surface.
1	Take Water Sample	Ensure that sample is taken from a point furthest point away from inlets
		Take water from approximately 30cm deep and 30cm from pool edge
2	Blank Photometer	Place 10ml of pool water in vial and place in photometer
		Press Blank button (on left)
3	Mix & Test Free Chlorine	Place 4ml of pool water in vial, crush a XF tablet, fill to 10ml, continue to crush & stir
		Place in photometer – select Chl2 10 from menu
		Press Read Sample button (on right). Write result down.
4	Prepare Total Chlorine	Add XT tablet to Free Chlorine test vial. Crush & stir.
		Allow to sit for 2 minutes. While waiting re-visit pool safety and swimmers in water.
5	Mix & Test Ph	Place 10ml of pool water in vial, crush a Phenol Red tablet, fill to 10ml, continue to crush & stir. You may use the Blank Water sample for this.
		Place in photometer – select pH from menu
		Press Read Sample button (on right). Write result down.
6	Mix & Test Total Alkalinity	Place 10ml of pool water in vial, crush Alkaphot tablet, continue to crush & stir. Allow to sit for 1 minute.
		Place in photometer – select Alk T. Write result down.
		Press Read Sample button (on right). Write result down.
7	Mix & Test Total Chlorine	Gently re-stir Total Chlorine mix – combined XF & XT
		Place in photometer – select Chl2 10 from menu.
		Press Read Sample button (on right). Write result down.
8	Calculate Combined Chlorine	Using the records “minus” FREE CHLORINE result from the TOTAL CHLORINE result. This figure provides the COMBINED CHLORINE result. Write result down.
9	Mix & Test Calcium Hardness	Place 10ml of pool water in vial, crush Calcicol #1 tablet in solution. Once dissolved add Calicol #2 tablet and crush/ mix together.
		Place in photometer – select Calc.
		Allow to sit for 2 minutes. While waiting continue with other tests as necessary or revisit pool safety and swimmers in water.
		Press Read Sample button (on right). Write result down.
10	Mix & Test Cyanuric Acid	Place 10ml of pool water in vial, crush Cyanuric Acid tablet, fill to 10ml, continue to crush & stir
		Place in photometer – select CNA.
